Wicken Conservation Society
Early
Days
During
the 1960s and 1970s, in common with many rural communities, concerns were
felt in the village about development that was out of character with the
traditional buildings of Wicken. Mr Dicken Moore, amongst others, lobbied
the local council consistently for a more sympathetic approach.
In
December 1987 a public meeting was called and the 38 villagers present
agreed to establish an amenity group focusing on conservation. The Steering
Committee was formed under the chairmanship of David Archibald, and included
Bob Clapham, Dennis Harris, Peter Keens and Jenny Tansley. Margaret Bull
was co-opted as Secretary.
The Society adopted
four objectives:
-
The promotion
of conservation matters in Wicken
-
The publication
of a newsletter
-
Regular review
of planning applications
-
The appearance
and upkeep of the village
The first meeting
of the Wicken Conservation Society took place on the 31st January 1988.
The first edition of the Wicken News was edited and published by Jean
Clark in May 1988 and consultation was requested with South Northamptonshire
District Council (SNDC) about planning matters concerning the village.
